Karen Greenberg Discusses Hunger Strikes at Guantanamo Bay

Submitted by on April 28 – 2013No Comment

Center on National Security Director Karen Greenberg appeared on The Brian Lehrer Show to discuss the hunger strikes that are occurring at Guantanamo Bay.

This is not protest as so many of the earlier hunger strikes were … this is really despair, and this is what it looks like. It’s a desperate situation … these people have just given up.

Greenberg said she believes the detainees are actually asking to be allowed to die. She said the United States government must ask whether it could give detainees a reason to live, particularly in the context of the 86 detainees that have already been cleared for release but remain at the detention facility.

I don’t see the choice as between “let them die or force-feed them.” They have to figure out what to do about this issue of indefinite detention. They have to face it, the United States government. They have to face it, and they have to solve it.
