Fordham Urban Law Journal Celebrates 40 Years

On Thursday, February 28, the Fordham Urban Law Journal celebrated forty years of urban law scholarship with a special anniversary symposium. Symposium Editor Eric Bernstein emphasized the historical evolution of the journal and the field. “[It] really inspired the theme [of the Symposium] to look back at the first volume and see what topics were published and to see where those topics are now.”

Panelists from law schools including Harvard, Yale, Georgetown, and Chicago-Kent presented their research and engaged in discussion about exclusionary zoning and housing in urban planning, urban environmental challenges, and consumer protection by local governments. Bernstein noted the help of the Journal’s advisors, Nestor Davidson and Annie Decker, in obtaining speakers. “They worked very hard and recommended great people for the Symposium,” he noted. The Symposium ended with a dialogue on the question, “What is urban law?”

All of the panels provoked lively questions from the audience. For instance, one presenter discussed the challenges for areas facing flood risks, which New Yorkers just experienced in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. As Joanna Zdanys, Editor-in-Chief of the Urban Law Journal, said, “When looking back, we found the specific legal issues didn’t map perfectly onto the issues today, but the broad issues are similar. The arc shows the relevance of the urban law topics in our first three issues.”
