Catholic Law Students Create Monthly Community Service Initiative

Submitted by on February 12 – 2013No Comment

photo-3After successful volunteering experiences throughout the fall, the Fordham Catholic Law Students Association (CLSA) has decided to create a new monthly community service initiative. Now students will have the opportunity to take part in different activities every month and make a difference in their community.

The initiative begins on Saturday, February 16, 2013. We invite all students to meet us at the law school cafeteria at 10:00am to head to the Catholic Charities Community Services Thrift Store in the Bronx. Volunteers will assist in organizing the store, sorting donated materials, and pricing and rearranging new items. We are excited to not only work hard to make the thrift store a better place for shoppers, but also to share with our community and form new friendships.

It is our hope that this initiative will fortify Fordham’s Jesuit dedication to public service. In 1973, Fr. Pedro Arrupe said that the “prime educational objective” of a Jesuit institution must be to “form men and women for others” who seek to live more simply and be agents of change who undertake to reform unjust structures. We hope this service opportunity will help build solidarity with the larger community, forces individuals to think critically about the law and the administration of justice, and encourages students to work to resolve and prevent conflict and its causes.

This new service initiative begins in the first week of Lent, when individuals are called upon to make sacrifices for the sake of the common good. As Jesuit Archbishop Oscar Romero said, “Those who surrender to the service of the poor through love of Christ will live like the grain of wheat that dies….The harvest comes because of the grain that dies…We know that every effort to improve society, above all when society is so full of injustice, is an effort that God blesses, that God wants, that God demands of us.”

We are also working with City Harvest from February 15-March 15th to collect foods for our hungry neighbors. The box will be located outside of PIRC starting February 15th. We hope you will take part in our new community service initiatives! Also, keep your eyes posted for new opportunities via our board and listserv emails.
